The Perspiration Paradox – As Temps Rise, More Kids Fall

A Well-Stocked Medicine Cabinet Should Include WaterGuard™ to Keep Bandaged Wounds Clean and Dry

April 29, 2010; Salt Lake City, UT— As the days get longer and temperatures rise, so do incidences of outdoor-related injuries.

According to Matthew J. Jimenez M.D., a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic fracture care and joint reconstruction based in Chicago, IL, children sustain more injuries during the warmer months because they engage in more vigorous activities.

Research confirms intuition – the more time children spend outside running, playing sports, riding bikes and skateboards, the more likely they are to suffer an injury.

Armed with these facts, parents should prepare for their kids’ cuts, scrapes, burns and even fractures with a well-stocked medicine cabinet.

“While it’s necessary to have bandages and anti-bacteria cream readily on hand, it’s equally important to have something to protect the wound against water when bathing, and dirt, grime and sweat when playing,” said Dr. Jimenez.

The patent-pending, self-sealing, WaterGuard™ sleeves were designed specifically for this purpose.

Made of a tear-resistant, flexible, ultra-thin polyurethane film, the WaterGuard sleeve is latex-free, non-toxic, hypoallergenic and provides easy, slip-on, self-sealing protection that fits snug enough to keep water and dirt out, while remaining comfortable to wear.

“By creating a product that achieves a watertight seal without restricting blood flow, we believe WaterGuard is a major advancement in wound and cast protection,” said Dr. Jimenez, a founding partner of WaterGuard LLC. “WaterGuard makes performing everyday tasks easier for people who have suffered an injury and need to keep their cast or wound dressing clean and dry.”

WaterGuard™ LAUNCHES THE ULTIMATE WATERTIGHT BARRIER
FOR CAST AND SKIN PROTECTION

Salt Lake City, UT—  WaterGuard™ is pleased to announce the launch of a product destined to become the new standard in cast and wound protection: an easy to use, thin, durable, self-sealing, water-tight bathing sleeve that protects casts and injuries from water and other contaminants. With a patent pending, WaterGuard™ is sure to become as common to the family medicine cabinet as first aid supplies.

Over 7,000 Americans experience injury to the lower and upper extremities daily, with the majority of fractures affecting the wrist, ankle and tibia. Those who have tried to bathe or shower after suffering a broken limb or surgery know the challenge of wrestling with plastic garbage bags and elastic bands to protect a cast or surgical site. The WaterGuard™ sleeve is slip-on, self sealing protection that fits snug enough to keep water out, while remaining comfortable to the user.  It slips over arm, leg and knee injury sites and comes in sizes for adults, children and infants. WaterGuard™ is ideal for protection of casts, splints, cuts, stitches, abrasions, rashes, skin and burn conditions, intravenous lines, catheters and ports.

Made of a tear-resistant, flexible, ultrathin polyurethane film, the material is latex-free, non-toxic and hypoallergenic. In addition to its waterproof properties, it is resistant to oil, grease, paints and other solvents. Lightweight and suitable for single or multiple uses, WaterGuard™ is cut to shape around the limb, with a design that allows hands and fingers to grip. The self-sealing closure opens to allow insert of the limb, then springs back automatically to settle into a comfortable waterproof seal against the skin, keeping dirt and moisture out; dressings, skin medications and ointments in; while never constricting blood flow.  Although currently available only for human limb protection, long-term plans for WaterGuard™ include developing similar products for animal use.

In development since 2005, WaterGuard™ was created by a team of three partners whose combined experience results in an ideal solution for limb protection. Henry Deutsch, a specialist in product development, cost and supply chain management, conceived of the concept after breaking a wrist himself and experiencing the challenge of protecting a cast while showering. “Where before, our only option for cast protection after an injury was the old garbage bag and elastic band method, we now have a supremely effective alternative that eliminates that mess and inconvenience,” says Deutsch. He partnered with Dr. Matt Jimenez, a preeminent orthopedic surgeon and researcher specializing in orthopedic fracture care and joint reconstruction. “We designed this product with patient safety and quality as our guiding themes,” notes Jimenez. “We have achieved a water tight seal without restricting blood flow to the injured extremity. WaterGuard™ is a major advancement in wound and cast protection.  We look forward to serving the community and helping patients return to normal function in a timely fashion.”

Tim Hartigan completed the team, bringing his background as a general manager and specialist in product management, importing, and international sourcing, including nearly 20 years with Wells Lamont Corporation. Hartigan emphasizes that WaterGuard™ fills a growing void in the market for an effective, cost efficient, reusable product to help people with their daily needs when they are already dealing with injury, trauma, or other unfortunate circumstances.

WaterGuard™ is endorsed by Dr. Eric Heiden, five-time Olympic gold medalist in speed skating, team physician to the U.S. Speedskating team, and renowned orthopedic surgeon. A portion of the proceeds from all sales of WaterGuard™ will be donated to Dr. Heiden’s Park City Sport Performance and Orthopedic Foundation, as well as SPLORE, a Utah-based non-profit organization that for 30 years, has been providing inclusive recreation and education programs for people of all abilities.

WaterGuard LLC is committed to the design, development and marketing of products that make everyday tasks easier for those dealing with adversity, hardships and injury.
